  17.  The concept for the series was created by Michael Sloan and Richard
  18. Lindheim over lunch in 1980. It was a couple of years before the script for
  19. the pilot was written by Sloan, as fulfillment of an obligation to
  20. Universal.
  21.  Sloan, who had grown up in England and was quite taken with Edward's
  22. interpretation of Callan, wrote Robert McCall with Edward in mind. He had
  23. already worked with him on an earlier, independent film (Hunted) in the
  24. early 70s, and knew he was perfect for the part. According to Sloan, in an
  25. article titled, "Equalizing the Casting Odds" (May 1991 EQ/EW Int'l
  26. Bullet), what he had in mind for McCall was "an image of a volcano being
  27. capped, a sensitivity that edged resignation with sadness."
  28.  But Sloan was afraid that CBS would never consider Edward for the role. The
  29. network did not typically cast foreign actors in the main roles of their
  30. drama series. Instead people like James Coburn and Ben Gazzara were
  31. discussed. However, Sloan was determined to at least have Edward
  32. considered. So Edward had to do a film test, made in a little studio in
  33. England, in which he acted 4 separate scenes from the pilot. According to
  34. Sloan, when Harvey Sheppard (then head of CBS programming) had watched
  35. Edward do the first scene, Sheppard "turned away from the TV monitor and
  36. said: 'All right, turn it off. I've seen enough. . .Michael's right. This
  37. is The Equalizer!'" And so Edward Woodward's portrayal of Robert McCall was
  38. born.
  39.  By the time the pilot was filmed, Sloan and Lindheim, who had collaborated
  40. on BJ and the Bear, had gone their separate ways. Lindheim had become an
  41. executive at Universal and Sloan was under contract to another studio.
  42. Sloan had been "loaned" for the production of the pilot only, and was not
  43. available to continue with the series. Lindheim, who was in Development at
  44. the studio, took on the task of helping to move The Equalizer from pilot to
  45. a full-blown series for CBS. (Would you like a more complete discussion of

  69. Because Michael Sloan was unavailable, the job of Executive Producer went
  70. to a Universal veteran, James McAdams. It wasn't an easy time. The first
  71. season of The Equalizer was full of ups and downs. Even though Universal
  72. had brought some of their successful writer/producers from the hit series
  73. Miami Vice to work on the show, scripts were inconsistently good and bad.
  74. There were differences in approach and concept. There were communication
  75. problems between those working in Hollywood and those in New York. This was
  76. a time of experimentation, as the writers worked out the details of
  77. McCall's world, finding what 'worked' and what didn't.
  78.  The ratings built slowly. Late in the season, CBS moved the show from its
  79. 10 p.m. Wednesday night berth to Tuesday at 10, in hopes of gaining it a
  80. larger audience and wider exposure. CBS really wanted the series to work.
  81. The Equalizer (and Edward) had received much critical acclaim and much
  82. notice in the press. But it was mainly due to the assistance of
  83. Entertainment Tonight and the series' growing number of fans who fought for
  84. it, that the program was given a chance to come back for a second year. It
  85. wasn't until the summertime reruns of 1986 that The Equalizer truly began
  86. to build its large and loyal audience.

  295. The second season of The Equalizer is generally thought to be its best and
  296. strongest. And, indeed, the series did receive its highest ratings during
  297. this time. At the end of the first season, there had been a 'shake-up' of
  298. the writers/producers. The new people who came in, such as Coleman Luck and
  299. Scott Shepherd, had to work together and coordinate everything--not an easy
  300. task when some people were based mostly in L.A. with the others on the set
  301. in N.Y.
  302.  It was a horrendous schedule for everyone. Edward and the cast and crew
  303. were sometimes working as much as 18 hours a day to get that week's program
  304. finished. But the scripts for the second season were the most consistent of
  305. the four. Everyone had a good feel for the character of McCall and for what
  306. they were trying to accomplish in the series.

  509.  The third season was the most difficult of the four. In the summer of
  510. 1987, Edward, who was in England filming a 4-hour telefilm
  511. Codename: Kyril, suffered two heart attacks. For a while, no one was sure
  512. if he would be able to return to New York or if The Equalizer had any kind
  513. of a future. Edward received thousands of get well wishes from around the
  514. world.
  515.  Luckily for CBS and Universal, they had decided to film 4 episodes
  516. (including the 2 hour season-opener) early in the summer. So they had 5
  517. hours in the can. When it was determined that Edward would be able to
  518. continue in the role of Robert McCall, it was to be in a much diminished
  519. capacity for some time, while he recuperated. There would no longer be the
  520. 18 hour workdays.
  521.  To help out until Edward returned, Universal brought in Robert Mitchum to
  522. star in a 2-hour episode. And they also cast Richard Jordan in the role of
  523. Harley Gage, to take some of the burden off of Edward until he was strong
  524. enough to return to the role of McCall fulltime. The creation of a new
  525. character to act as 'sidekick' caused a lot of problems: First, with the
  526. fans, who felt that the regular characters played by Keith Szarabajka,
  527. Robert Lansing and William Zabka were quite capable and able to fill the
  528. gaps, without bringing in someone new. They played already accepted and
  529. well-liked characters. And second, according to inside sources, Richard
  530. Jordan took on the role in the belief that he was the one who was going to
  531. 'save' this program. This caused much tension on the set, after Edward
  532. returned. Jordan never fully understood that Edward Woodward WAS the
  533. Equalizer and for his fans, no one else would ever take his place.
  534.  It was a relief to everyone when Edward was well enough to resume his full
  535. duties as Robert McCall and Harley Gage was gone for good. And the rest of
  536. the season progressed with strong scripts and good stories.

  731.  The last season of The Equalizer was considered by some to have many of the
  732. darkest scripts. But that was because it was decided that they would take
  733. on more serious topics. In the past, there had been the occasional story
  734. about homelessness or child abuse, but for the most part, it was a series
  735. meant for diversion, for entertainment purposes. Now, with Universal
  736. bringing in several new writers/producers, they tried to tackle more
  737. substantive subjects, in hopes of helping along the way. So in the final
  738. season, one finds episodes about gun control, AIDS, child/wife abuse, and
  739. gangs in schools.
  740.  There had been other changes, too. Some at CBS, where Kim LeMasters had
  741. taken over the role of head of programming. As with most changes of this
  742. kind, new Entertainment chiefs tend to dislike the projects that they did
  743. not originate themselves. And The Equalizer was no exception. It quickly
  744. became clear that LeMasters did not support the series. It was removed from
  745. its 10 o'clock berth, which was given to a LeMasters pet project (Wiseguy).
  746. When it finally premiered in late October of 1988, the promotion campaigns
  747. changed and it was frequently pre-empted. It was removed from the air
  748. altogether for a while and then, without much fanfare changed to Thursday
  749. night against heavy competition. There was little doubt in anyone's mind,
  750. that Kim LeMasters was going to see to it that this was The Equalizer's
  751. final season.
  752.  On May 19th, 1989, the announcement came that the series would not be on
  753. the next year's schedule. And fans went crazy. CBS's phone lines were
  754. flooded with protests. The mail started pouring in. Fan groups such as the
  755. newly-formed EQ/EW International, tried to organize a campaign to convince
  756. CBS to bring back the show. They uncovered what was later referred to as
  757. "Equalgate," (Michelle Greppi, 1989, NY Post), with the discovery that CBS
  758. had even sent bags and bags of mail to the Woodwards, instead of reading it
  759. themselves and counting it in the show's favor. In a funny story told to
  760. EQ/EW Int'l, the Woodwards describe running from one mail dropbox to
  761. another in the small NY town where they were staying, stuffing them with
  762. letters meant for CBS, which had been forwarded to them by a network that
  763. refused to listen.
  764.  To many loyal CBS fans, it came as a shock that this network would not
  765. listen, did not care what they had to say or how they felt. It was a few
  766. years later, when Howard Stringer finally admitted that the network had
  767. made a mistake by cancelling The Equalizer too soon. It still had a strong
  768. audience and could have continued for many more successful seasons.
  769.  Universal gave its USA Network the first option on syndication. It aired
  770. for 2 or 3 years there, eventually being buried in the midnight hour and
  771. then later, buried altogether. There probably isn't a single European
  772. country which hasn't aired the series. Also, it has been shown in countries
  773. like Japan, India, Australia and New Zealand and has earned the love and
  774. enthusiasm of millions of fans around the world. In the States, beginning
  775. in January 1996, the Arts & Entertainment Network began showing the series
  776. every weekday at 7pm (E)/4 pm (P).
  777.  September 17, 1995 marked the 10th Anniversary of its premiere on CBS. And
  778. to this day, fans continue to hope for an Equalizer reunion telefilm (and
  779. indeed, there are people working toward that goal). It seems as though fans
  780. of this series will never get enough of Robert McCall, his life and his
  781. stories.
